Blackwater Bridge Replacement Scheme, Monaghan

Duration: 78 Weeks

In 2019 Monaghan County council elected Fox Building and Contracts Ltd. to start work on replacing the Blackwater Bridge on the N2 just north of Monaghan Town. The existing structure carries the N2 traffic over the Blackwater River.

To minimise disruption and ease congestion, Fox Contracts approached us to discuss options available for a two-way bridge with separate pedestrian walk way.

Our proposal was our JSB Girder bridge with a cantilevered foot walk meaning reduced civils needed as there was no requirement for the foot walk to be supported separately. Also, to speed up the installation process, Janson Bridging supplied a built off-site solution meaning that there were three 21m loads delivered to site. The foot walk was assembled on site in two sections and connected to the vehicle bridge, and then lifted into place in one day.

Whilst our temporary bridge was in place, work was undertaken to demolish the existing bridge and replace it with a brand new three-span reinforced concrete bridge.
